Rules and Rates for Movers

Limits for Moving Charges

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission sets the minimum and maximum prices that licensed, in-state moving companies can charge for household moves. These prices are listed in a document known as a tariff, which also explains the rules movers must follow.

The commission creates this tariff through a public process that includes reviewing state laws, industry practices, and consumer needs. Moving companies must follow the tariff and cannot charge less than the minimum rate or more than the maximum rate.

What This Means for Consumers

Movers can still compete for your business by offering different prices, as long as those prices are within the approved range. For consumers, this means you can compare movers knowing that all licensed, in-state companies must follow the same rules for pricing, service terms, and protections.
