Choosing a Licensed Mover in Washington State

About In-State Moves

The commission regulates household moving companies that conduct moves within the state of Washington. A moving company operating within Washington must have a valid permit from the UTC. It is illegal for movers to work without one.

Some unlicensed moving companies exploit their customers, keep goods until a large payment is made, and illegally increase their estimates. Before you hire a mover, confirm that they have their permit. The UTC ensures that companies with permits charge fair and proper rates, carry insurance, and keep their vehicles safely maintained.

If you hire an illegal mover, UTC staff are very limited in ways to help if something goes wrong.

About Out-of-state Moves

The commission does not regulate moves that happen between states. If you are moving across state lines, check the company's permit status with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) or call 1-800-637-0637. You can also file a complaint with FMSCA.
