564 Area Code Overlay

The telecommunications network ensures that calls are routed correctly. Each number plan area (NPA) or area code has a limited number of telephone numbers. To make sure there are enough numbers for everyone, the UTC and the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) work with industry service providers to implement area code relief, which replenishes telephone numbers.

Background

In 2017, area code 564 was introduced in Western Washington under Docket UT-143787. The 564 area code was created to assign new numbers as the existing 360, 206, 253, and 425 area codes become exhausted.

As part of a phased approach in Western Washington, the 564 area code was initially used to relieve the 360 area code in August 2017. On June 15, 2023, the commission issued Order 1 in Docket UT-230108, which initiated the next phase for Western Washington, focusing on the 206 area code.

Current Phase

Starting June 10, 2025, if you request a new phone number or an extra line in the 206 area, you may get a number with the 564 area code. You will still need to dial 10 digits to make a call (area code + phone number), just like you do now.

This change will not affect:

  • Your current phone number

  • Your service plan

  • Your rates
