The UTC’s Rail Safety Program helps keep people and railroad workers safe. Here’s what we do:
-
Inspections – We work around the state in cooperation with the Federal Railroad Administration. We check that railroads follow state and federal safety rules for crossings, signals, hazardous materials, operating rules, train equipment, and track conditions.
-
Crossing projects – We work with road authorities and railroads on crossing projects including new crossings, adding signals and gates, and closing crossings.
-
Investigate incidents – We help respond to major rail incidents and investigate any rail accident that results in a death.
-
Handle complaints – We work with residents, local governments, and companies to handle complaints. These can include rough crossings, blocked crossings, train noise, and people trespassing on railroad property.
-
Protect workers – We partner with the Department of Labor & Industries to make sure railroads follow safety rules for employees.
-
Fund safety projects – We support projects that make crossings safer through the Grade Crossing Protective Fund.
-
Raise public awareness – We partner with the national Operation Lifesaver Program to educate the public about staying safe near railroad tracks and crossings.
