Railroad Crossings

UTC staff work around the state and check safety at public and private railroad crossings. We make sure crossings comply with state law, UTC rules, and the Manual of Traffic Control Devices by regularly inspecting signs, warning systems, and crossing surfaces.

For private railroad crossings, the UTC has safety rules where trains carry crude oil. Staff inspect these private crossings to make sure the rules are followed.

First-class cities - Aberdeen, Bellingham, Bremerton, Everett, Richland, Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Yakima - are in charge of safety at their own railroad crossings. These cities can choose to join the UTC Crossing Safety Inspection Program for help with inspections.
