About Commission Cases
When regulated companies want to change their rates or services, they must file a request and present their case to the commission. The commission will decide during an Open Meeting, where they may approve, reject, suspend, or alter the request, or at the end of a formal case.
Open Meetings
Most company requests get processed during a commission Open Meeting. The commissioners meet to decide on utility and transportation cases, and the public can make verbal comments for commissioners to consider.
For more details on Open Meetings and recent requests made by regulated companies, visit our Open Meetings page.
Formal Cases
If the commission decides to suspend a company’s request, then the formal hearing process begins. In this process, public comments are given to Public Counsel, a section of the Washington State Office of the Attorney General, to be entered into the case record. Public Counsel represents consumers in many electric, natural gas, telecommunications, and water cases.
