Walkways are pathways located next to or near a railroad track, or on a trestle or bridge, that provide an area for a railroad employee to perform duties associated with those areas. The UTC has safety jurisdiction over some walkways inside rail yards. Walkways outside rail yards fall under the Department of Labor and Industries’ rules.
UTC staff inspect walkways in rail yards every four years. They may inspect more often if problems or complaints come up.
