Emergency Notification System

Let “Blue” Save You!

The Federal Railroad Administration requires railroads to post a blue Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign at every highway-rail crossing. This sign helps the railroad’s emergency response staff locate the crossing and respond to safety problems and emergency situations.

The blue sign is posted near the crossing and easy to see. It lists the railroad’s emergency phone number and the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) National Crossing Inventory Number. This number is unique to each crossing. It tells the railroad the exact location.

Using the information on the ENS sign is the fastest way to alert the railroad about an emergency or problem at a crossing.

In an emergency:

  • Find the blue and white ENS sign at the crossing.

  • Call for help. Use the railroad’s emergency number on the sign or dial 911.

  • Tell the dispatcher your location. Read the identification number from the sign (see below). Explain what the emergency is.
