Public Safety

The first responsibility assigned to the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission when it was established in 1905 was railroad safety. Today the UTC provides public safety oversight for railroad, pipeline and transportation industries.

You can find out more about the UTC’s safety program for each industry by clicking on the links on the left side of this page.

Railroad Safety
Serves the public and railroad employees by implementing engineering, education and compliance programs that reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage on or around railroads.

  • Operation Lifesaver is a free public service education program dedicated to preventing and reducing fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and along railroad rights-of-way.

  • Call Before You Dig! Digging anywhere in the state of Washington without calling for utility location markings two business days prior to starting is against the law.
