Utilities and Transportation Commission appoints new executive director
OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) today announced Steven V. King as the regulatory agency’s new executive director and secretary. He has been acting in that role since February.
“Steve is an innovative leader with a wealth of institutional knowledge,” said UTC Chairman, David Danner. “He has been the force behind the commission’s efforts to improve our processes and performance and he is focused on getting results. We are pleased that Steve has agreed to take on this important leadership role.”
Most recently, King served as the UTC’s Director of Safety and Consumer Protection. In that role, he oversaw licensing and regulatory enforcement of statewide pipeline safety, transportation and railroad safety, and consumer protection laws and rules. He received the Governor’s Distinguished Leadership Award in 2011 for his work in this position.
King has been with the commission since 1983, having held positions previously in the regulation of telecommunications companies, agency administration, and utility operational oversight.
King is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound and holds a master’s degree in public affairs from the University of Washington.
The UTC regulates the rates and services of telecommunications companies, investor-owned electric utilities, natural gas and water companies, garbage-collection haulers, residential movers and charter-bus companies, commercial ferries, pipeline companies, and a low-level radioactive waste repository.
