Agreement with Georgia-Pacific on gas system safety violations effective today
Company agrees to make safety improvements

OLYMPIA, Wash. –  State pipeline regulators today approved an agreement between Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products (Camas) LLC (GP) and staff members of the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) to improve procedures and recordkeeping necessary to further ensure the safety of the company’s natural gas pipeline.

The UTC is requiring the company to complete the natural gas safety improvements and correct potential violations of pipeline safety rules. The agreement requires the company to revise its operations and maintenance manual and complete remedial actions related to the pipeline as outlined by pipeline safety staff.

Under the agreement, the company agreed to a plan to address the operations and maintenance of its natural gas pipeline, including:

• Reviewing and updating welding procedures.
• Updating and revising its Operations and Maintenance Manual.
• Correcting compliance items identified in the UTC staff inspection.
• Conduct more frequent leak surveys.
• Perform an in-line inspection of the pipeline within five years.

GP has already completed several of the compliance items.
The agreement was in response to an inspection report filed by commission staff in September 2011, citing probable violations of gas safety rules and recommending action to bring the company into compliance with those rules.

GP’s natural gas pipeline is approximately 1.7 miles long, plus related pipeline facilities, and it serves GP’s paper mill in Camas, Washington.

Established by the Legislature in 1955, the UTC’s Pipeline Safety Program regulates the safety practices of 28 pipeline companies and conducts safety inspections on more than 24,000 miles of natural gas and hazardous-liquid pipelines in Washington.
